Another Week Already?

Before I had Hazel staying at home, not working or doing too much of anything, drove me to unspeakable acts.  I was so worried that I would be bored at home with her, and that is sometimes true, at least while she is still so young.  Yet the time seems to fly by, and I can't believe my baby is 5 and half weeks old already!  We took her in for a check-up on Monday and she is growing like crazy.  She's at the 75% for height and is gaining weight appropriately to match, weighing in at 9 lbs 11 oz.

Not everything was perfect, though.  She was sound asleep at the appointment, so the doctor got a really great listen to her heartbeat and noticed a murmur.  The two of us are headed to Syracuse tomorrow to a pediatric cardiologist to get it thoroughly checked out.  We have to be there at 8 am, which means Amos will be dropped off at work at an awesome 6 am.  I am worried, even though everyone and their momma has assured me most of the time it's either temporary, as in will close up on its own, or minor.  Still, I think it's having to go to a "pediatric cardiologist" that makes it freaky; someone so small shouldn't have to see such a serious doctor (say that 5 times fast!).

  1. we are learning about murmurs is school right now and everything kind of murmur so far are normal in children, so although i know you are freaked out, because I would be too (it's a mother thing), I'm sure she will be okay. Specialist are alwasy good to check with because they know about the specific problem. Lola has been to see an orthopedic specialist and also an ENT specialist. I am quick to get whatever is going on with her checked out. Let me know what is going on…Amy

  2. Yikes! I don't blame you for being concerned at all. Pediatric Cardiologist does sound scary.*smoosh*I'm glad you're getting her checked out, though, so the doctor can hopefully put your fears and concerns to rest. That is such a horrible feeling. When I was pregnant with my first baby I went in for my regular checkup. I was about four or five months along, I think. The NP listened to the baby's heartbeat and got kind of a strange look on her face. I heard it too…the heart sounded like it was skipping a beat, so of course I immediately thought it was a heart murmur. The NP went to check with the OB, but she didn't seem very worried about it. They scheduled me to come back the next week, though, to double check. I had actually rented one of those doppler things so I could listen to the heartbeat at home, so that only made it all worse. I kept hoping it would go away, but every time I listened I would hear that skipped heartbeat. It eventually did go away and everything was fine, but it freaked me out. I read up on it all afterwards and it turns out this was a normal development stage during pregnancy! It would have been nice if the NP or the OB had told me that. :SGood luck with the appointment!
